Obituary from Christian Conservator, 14-Feb-1894, by F. W. Rickenbrode:
“John Townsend Allaman was a United Brethren Minister in Pennsylvania. When he was two years old his mother died, leaving him to be cared for and reared by strangers. Almost immediately after his mother’s death he was taken by his foster parents to Ohio and from there to Iowa. He was now six years old.

“He was converted in Iowa City at the age of seventeen in a M. E. revival, but joined the United Brethren Church at Lisbon about two years later. This church was his choice because of the attitudes on slavery and secrecry (sic) questions. When he was nineteen he was licensed to preach. Both his license and ordination papers were signed by Bishop Glossbrenner.

“Rev. Allaman attended school at Mt. Vernon, Iowa and later at Western College. His library contained some of the best works on religious subjects. In these he was well-versed. He was an able thinker and expressed himself in a fluent and expressive manner.

“While attending Western College, he married Adeline Bedell, Nov. 29, 1837. She was also a student at Western College. They had a family of five children, three daughters and two sons. One daughter, Rosie, died in infancy, and one son, Sammie, died at the age of 17. The oldest daughter, Ella, is married to W. S. Grigsby and lives in Stone County, Missouri. G. W. Allaman, the only living son, is a practicing physician in Blue Mound, Missouri and Daisy, the youngest daughter, is at home.

“After entering the ministry, he travelled in Iowa for seven years, then moved to Minnesota where he preached for seven and a half years. For six of these years he was the presiding elder - being at home but four days in a year. The hardships then were great. The travelling was done by horse and buggy or by sleigh, the thermometer being 30 to 35 degrees below zero at times.

“In one missionary tour around the head of the Mississippi River, he traveled 520 miles carrying the gospel further into the wilds than it was ever carried before.

“He came from Minnesota to Missouri in 1873 and lived there seven years, then returned to Iowa where he preached in the East Des Moines Conference for three and a half years.

“In the autumn of 1883, he returned to Missouri, locating near Avalon, where he lived till his death. In Missouri he was elected to the office of presiding elder three times. He was also sent to the General Conference three times, once from Minnesota and twice from Missouri. The last time was the conference of 1893 held at Hudson, Indiana.

“Rev. Allaman was always loyal to the United Brethren Church. He labored thirty-five years and upheld its principles to the last. In his death, which occurred January 28, 1894, the church lost a stauch supporter, his wife lost a loving husband and his children a protecting father.
