Born: 17 MAR 1883 in Canton, Fulton Co., IL Notes: by D. B. Allaman Jesse quit school at age 15 to help his father raise his large family. He went on the old Cathuaqua circuit as prop man and also stage hand. In 1910 he joined the Illinois State Militia, and was sent Indiana for training and was discharged from the US Army and rejoined after being discharged last, 1923, for wife urged hjim to quit the Army, a thing that she regretted many times. He received his final discharge from the US Army after serving 13 years service. He was Sgt. in quartermaster corp. He served at Fort Des Moines, and Camp Dodge, Iowa for several years. He was on the Mexican Border troubles 1913 to 1915. During WW2 he worked at the Hotel Custer, Galesburg, IL, as stationary engineer. keeping all the hotel equipment in working order. His hobby was making furniture for the 14 room mansion that we lived in Des Moines, , Iowa. Father died July 2, 1955 in Veterans Hospital, Dwight, Ill. of old age and infirmities. Rose Inez Fox was the daughter of John Arthur Fox and Rose Lee Fretz. They were large farmers near Adel, Iowa owning 786 acres of land. Mother worked outside the home for several years as German Chef de gare and she was excellent home keeper and cook. She was born in a one room log cabin while her father tried to improve the land. She died March 4, 1940 of celebral hemmerage and a stroke. Both buried in Memorial Park cemetary, Galesburg, Ill. Was at Fort Des Moines, IA where both children were born. Worked at Chicago Airmotor Co. until layed off 1925, when he came back to Illinois, living with his youngest sister in Orange Twp., Knox Co., IL In 1926, John Janes came to Des Moines to bring wife and children to him. The next spring, the family moved to Galesburg, IL. |
