Born: 11 MAY 1729 in Schalbach, Lorraine Notes: was born on 11 May 1729 in Schalbach, Lorraine, France. He was baptized on 11 May 1729 in Schalbach, Lorraine, France. He died on 16 Oct 1804 in Heidelburg, Lehigh, PA, USA. Revolutionary War Veteran. Immigrated to America on Captain Randolph's ship "Lydia" from Rottendam, Holland. They arrived in America on 9 October 1749. He settled in a German settlement in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, eventually married Marie Barbara ?, acquired 290 acres of land and raised 8 children. See Preston County, WV History, pages 81 & 105. He was a man of substance and education. Individual found in the "DAR PATRIOT INDEX", published by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, published 1966. Entry found on page 32. This entry added detail to birth date and death date. He is listed as a Court Martial man by the DAR PATRIOT INDEX. Served from Pennsylvania. From: THE BALLIET, BALLIETT, BALLIETTE, BALYLEAT, BOLYARD and ALLIED FAMILIES by STEPHEN CLAY BALLIET, 1968 JOSEPH was born in Lorraine and was baptised there May 11, 1729. He was a son of Abraham Baillet, born 1684, died April, 1767, and his wife Susanna Hahn. Susanna, born 1683, died December 18, 1777, was a daughter of Jacob Hahn of Fleislseim. Both his parents died in Lorraine. At the age of twenty JOSEPH came to America, landing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 9, 1749: "At the Court House at Philadelphia Monday Oct. 9, 1749 Present: Tho's Lawrence, Esquire, Mayor. "The Foreigners whose names are underwritten, imported in the Ship Lydia, Capt. John Randolph, from Rotterdam, but last from Cowes in England, did this day take the usual Qualifications to the Government. By the List 154; Persons . . . Wirtemberg, Dourlach, Zweybreeht, Palatinate." (Pa. Ger. Pioneers, VI. p 421) This is followed by the signatures of the passengers. JOSEPH signed his name as "Joseb Baliet" and his signature is reproduced from page 478, volume 2, ibid: JOSEPH settled in Heidelberg Township in what is now Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, about eight miles northwest of the home of his cousin, PAULUS Balliet. On August 9, 1750, JOSEPH filed a warrant for 25 acres of land in Heidelberg Township. (see PA, 3S, V 24, p 116) A certified copy of this warrant is reproduced on page 298. JOSEPH added to his holdings and died possessing over 290 acres of land which he bequeathed to his wife and children. From the tax list of Heidelberg Township, Northampton County, as recorded in tlse Pennsylvania Archives, the following entries were taken: 1772 Proprietary Tax (PA, 3S, VI9, p 51) "Ballied, Joseph, Fa'r ? 17s 4p" 1785 Federal Tax (ibid, p 121) "Balliet, Joseph. 225 Acres 3 Horses 3 Cattle ? 16s 11p" JOSEPH was married about the year 1750 to Maria Barbara (maiden name unknown). His will lists seven children, but it is believed he had another son, Daniel, who died young: ". . . Daniel born Sept. 13, died Oct. 18, 1773". (see A.H. of L.C., V2, p 48) The surviving children of Joseph and Maria Barbara who were born in Heidelberg Township were named: Jacob, Magdalena, Leonard, Katherine, Barbara, Stephen, and Joseph, 2nd. Some of the children left Heidelberg before the death of JOSEPH in 1804, and within a few years the others also settled elsewhere. The U.S. Census of 1810 and 1820 docs not list any Ballets as residents for the township. The census of 1830 records a "Helfrick F. Balliet Jr" as a resident, however, his identity is unknown. Joseph came to America on Captain John Randolph's ship "Lydia" from Rotterdam, Holland and Cowes, England arriving in Philadelphia PA on Oct 9 1749. He settled in Heidelberg Township, Northampton County (now Lehigh County PA. Joseph and four sons served in the Revolutionary War. A general muster roll of the Third Battalion of Northampton Co. From: THE BALLIET, BALLIETT, BALLIETTE, BALYLEAT, BOLYARD and ALLIED FAMILIES by STEPHEN CLAY BALLIET, 1968 JACOB BALLIET of Joseph and Maria Jacob, hereafter referred to as Captain Jacob, was born July 6, 1751 and died November 6, 1831, age 80 years and 4 months, at Dryland, Pennsylvania (Kieffer, p 328). Captain Jacob married twice. His first wife was Anna Maria Ritter. After her death, he married Elizabeth Barbara Ritter, a sister to his first wife. Barbara Balliet, a sister to Captain Jacob, married Daniel Ritter, a brother to Captain Jacob's two wives. The pioneer settlers of the Ritter family were four brothers, Paul, Henry, Martin, and Casper, who arrived at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, September 11, 1732. Casper Ritter, under sixteen in 1732, lived in lower Milford Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania for a number of years. About 1757, be moved to Dryland in Bethlehem Township, where he was constable and a member of the Dryland Church. He died in 1792. Casper and his wife, Anna Maria Ritter, had eight children, including Anna Maria, Elizabeth Barbara and Daniel Ritter mentioned above. (A. H. of L.C., V3, p 1060) Casper served as a clerk in "Bethlehem Township April l6teen 1782 List of Captin Jacob Ballead Compynee" (PA, 5S, V8, p 392). The wills of Casper Ritter and his wife, Anna Maria, of Bethlehem Township, probated April 2, 1792 and January 30, 1803, state that their daughter, Barbara, was the wife of Jacob Balliet, also two grand children were mentioned-Barbara and Susanna Balliet. The Revolutionary War record of Captain Jacob Balliet is given as documented in the Pennsylvania Archives, 5th Series, Volume 8, pages as noted: page 304 "A general Muster Roll of the Fourth Battalion of Northampton County Militia, May 14, 1778.
