Husband: William Sturgis HOPPING |
Born: 10 JUL 1839 in Astoria, Fulton Co., IL Notes: Biographical sketch reads: Wm. S. Hopping, farmer, sec. 5; P.O., Astoria. In obtaining our biographical sketches many incidents come to hand. On the farm of Mr. Hopping is a large mound, one of the largest in this county, and in conversation we learn that relics of an interesting nature have been found; is the younges son of Gideon Hopping. He married Miss Sarah J. Sturges, of South Carolina; her father, was a living witness of the famous surrender at Yorktown. In 1823 Gideon Hopping and wife, each on horseback, made the wetern trip to Illinois and stopped near Springfield. In 1836 Mr. H. moved to Fulton Co., settling in Vermont township, and passed away over a quarter of a century ago. Mrs. H., who is a sister of Dr. Daniel B. Sturges. of South Bend, Ind, the wellknown writer and minister of the Gospel, passed away but a few short weeks ago. She left but 3 children, - Gideon J., Joseph and Wm. S. Wm. S. was married in 1861 to Miss Mary Cooper, a daughter of James Cooper, by whom he had 5 children, 4 are living: Sarah J., John W., Mellissa E., Melinda B. and Joseph H., deceased. Tombstone reads. William S Hopping Died Oct 29, 1903 Aged 64Ys 3Ms I 9Ds - same stone as Mary A. his wife Obituary reads: Wm. S. Hopping was born in Vermont Twp.. Fulton County, Ill.. May 11, 1839, and died at his home near Union Chapel, Oct.29, 1903, aged 64 years, 5 months and 18 days. He was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Union Chapel when he was 19 years of age, remaining a faithful member for 45 years. He had been an exhorter and local preacher for a number of years. He had been afficted for a long time, at times suffering severely. He was a strong believer in the Bible, and just a few days before his death read two chapters, saying they were the best of all. In 1860 he was married to Mary A. Cooper. To them were born 5 children. One, Joseph Henry, died when 18 months old. The other children, Mrs. Sarah Jane Janes, John, William, Malissa Ellen Janes, and Malinda Belle Janes, with the wife remain to mourn his loss. He was a kind and loving husband and father. |

Born: 03 JAN 1839 in Woodland, Fulton Co., IL Notes: Mary had no brothers or sisters - Murphy-Sedgewick Funeral Records; 1918-1940. She was born January 3, 1839. In 1860 she married William Sturgis Hopping. She died September 11, 1921 at the age of 82. Mary and William had five children. |
